Blog 10
This blog is more random then my others because I ran out of topics. While I was reading this book I thought it would make a good movie. As I learned more about the characters I thought of actors and actresses to play each character. First for Pattyn I thought Kristen Stewart should play her begins Kristen has this intenseness about her acting that Pattyn has. When she acts it's so intense and Pattyn is like that in the book. For Ethan I thought Lucas Till should play him because he is very cute like Ethan is describes and Ethan is also describe as a southern gentleman just like Lucas. Aunt J I though should be played by Virginia Madsen because Aunt J is such a free spirit but she has this hidden pain behind everything she does and in interviews Virginia seems the same way.

This book reminds me of one episode of One Tree Hill. In the one episode where Nathan owed money he couldn't pay. When he refused to do what they said he hit Haley, Nathans wife, with his car. Haley was pregnant just like Pattyn. Only Haley's baby and Nathan both lived, but they might not have.
This book also reminds me of a movie I saw years ago about the Holocaust. I can't remember then name but A young German girl got beaten for sneaking behind her parents back to hang out with a Jewish girl. This is like Pattyn getting beaten for loving someone who wasn't Mormon. Also like Aunt J getting beaten and her love getting beaten for being separate religions.

When I was reading this book I felt a lot of sadness and pain. At the beginning I felt normal not really any feelings, but when Pattyn starting doubting her religion and losing her family I began to feel sad because I have watched people go through the same thing. Then close to the end when the car accident happened I felt a lot of sadness and pain because it was a incident close to home. This book is very tragic and it only makes you feel happiness for a short while. Like when Pattyn begins to discover who she is with her aunt and when she falls in love with Ethan. Even though this book causes a lot of emotional pain it is still a good book and worth the sadness.

An experience I had in some ways. When I went to Windham in grade 7, I had a close friend named Josh. He came and stayed with his aunt every summer to I got to see him then. Around Christmas time I got a phone call from his family saying he had past away in a car accident, A drunk driver hit their car. I wasn't in love with him like Pattyn was with Ethan but I still loved him in a different sense. I know what Pattyn is going through when she loses her faith in god over it because I went through the same thing. It's hard when you lose someone but it brings out how you really feel, like it brought out how Pattyn really felt about her religion so that was the only benefit in the death.

I new character was introduced in the middle/ end of the book. His name is Ethan. Ethan is one of my favourite characters in this book. He is very sweet and treats Pattyn very good. He is also describe to be very good looking. Ethan is the son of Aunt J's very close friend. He come over many times to help them with the animal feed and he also helps with the cattle herds. He is good on horses. In this book he is not a Mormon which makes Pattyn's dad mad and doesn't allow them to see each other anymore, but they don't listen.
Also Pattyn gets pregnant with Ethan's child, but unfortunately she loses the baby in a car accident at the end. This also causes her to lose Ethan. In my opinion the death of Ethan and the baby was the worst part of the book and it would be the one thing i would change.

If I could befriend anyone in this book I would befriend Derek. Derek is very sweet in the book. He is a bit of a trouble maker but he seems like a very fun person to be around. He like to dance and drink which I enjoy. (mostly dancing) I think because we are both such lively people we would make good friends and nothing would be boring. The only think I do not like about Derek is that he is a smoker. To me that is a big turn of but I still think we could make good friends. One more problem with me and Derek becoming friend would be that my parents are strict with who I am friend with and I don't think he would make the cut. That doesn't bother me but as proven with his reaction to Pattyn's dad it would bother him.
I also think I could befriend Jackie, that is Pattyn sister. Unlike Pattyn she is very sure of who she is and she is a very happy energetic person. Which is a good thing. She seems like she would be a very interesting person to be friends with and I think we would have a fun time hanging out. Also I would feel safe being her friend because she doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. Plus by seeing the little amount of her I have seen in the book I don't think she would start.

I found Pattyn changed the most throughout the book. At the beginning she was a bit of a loner. She felt uncomfortable with who she was and what she believed but she made herself believe it anyway. She was very uptight. Towards the middle she starts being a bit rebellious. She disobeys her parents and lies to them. She gets a boy friend and starts going to parties and drink. After her and her boyfriend break up she begins getting angry. She breaks a window and a girls nose. She makes disturbances at her church and fights with her parents about what they believe and about what is wrong with them. When she is sent to live with her aunt in Caliente she begins to change her ways again.
Also Pattyns father changes a bit in the book. At the beginning he is very angry about one of his sons dieing and another being gay. He is closed of and abusive. He is also an alcoholic, his favourite drink being Johnie W.B whiskey. When he has to take Pattyn to Caliente he begins to open up and talk about his past and he is sober for the ride. It is a minor change but it is him at his best.
